Serenaded by Tough Guy

A few months ago, Tough Guy got a guitar.  Now, he doesn't know how to play, nor is he taking lessons, he just likes to strum the strings and sing at the top of his lungs.  Normally his songs are about his toys or his books.  However, a few weeks ago, this was his song.

I call it "Ode to a Nanny".

Miss JoAnna
Is the best nanny in the whole entire world
Miss JoAnna
Is the best nanny in the whole entire world
Miss JoAnna is just the best

Spoken: wait – here’s the sad part

But Miss JoAnna never comes on Saturdays
Or Sundays
Or Mondays
She only comes on Tuesdays
And every other day of the week
But  she’s still
The best nanny in the whole entire world

Miss JoAnna
Is the best
Nanny
In...
The whole...
Entire...
World!

Tattoos?

Today while sitting in a movie theater with Tough Guy and Dash, waiting for "Free Birds" to start, a commercial for Moto X came on.  If you're not familiar with this commercial, there is a part of it where it shows different tattoos, one right after another.  This conversation followed:

TG: Miss JoAnna, you should get a tattoo.
Me: I should?
TG: Yep.
Me: What kind of tattoo should I get?
TG: Maybe a mermaid?  Or something girly like that.
Me: A mermaid?  I don't know...
D: Oh, I know!  You should get a tattoo with (Tough Guy)'s face, then you can get one with my face, and one with (Mr. Independent)'s face, and then one of my Mom and Dad...
Me: I have no words...

Welcome To My Funny Nanny Life!

I am starting this blog to document not only life as a nanny, but also many of the funny experiences nannies have with their charges.  We all know that "kids say the darndest things", but they also do the darndest things, and we nannies see and hear them all day.  In this blog, I hope to share funny stories from my own nanny career, but I also invite nannies or parents who employ nannies to e-mail me with your funny stories so I can include them, as well (you will always receive credit for the stories you send me!)  To send me your funny story, click on "About Me" on the right side of this page, then click on "E-mail".

Here is just a little bit about me.

I started nannying at the age of 17, but have done many jobs working with children including providing child care in my home, being a Children's Pastor for three churches (not all at the same time!), temporary and special event child care/nannying, and, of course, being a Mom to my amazing daughter, who is now in college.  I am currently a part-time Nanny for a family with three awesome boys, who call me Miss J or Miss JoAnna.  On the internet, I call them "Tough Guy", who is 5 years old, "Dash", who is going to be 8 years old *very* soon, and "Mr. Independent", who is 10 years old.  I also have nicknames for former charges, but I won't worry about breaking those out until I am posting stories about them specifically.

To get us started on the funny part of this blog, here is a conversation I had in the car with Tough Guy a few weeks ago:
TG: Miss J, did you know that I'm driving the car, not you?
Me: Really? That's great, that means I can take a nap for the rest of the drive, right?
TG: No!!!
Me: Why not?
TG: (said in his most exasperated voice) I'm only driving for pretend!
Me: Oh. How come you're not driving for real?
TG: Well, you know what they say. "Kids can't drive".
Me: Is that what they say?
TG: Yes. (long pause) It is.
